Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaker. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency, a web site that features videos and comments analysing the way women are depicted in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist media critic from Canada, as well as a blogger. Feminist Frequency is a site designed to provide education on female roles in popular culture, is directed by Sarkeesian. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they appear in popular culture. In addition, she is working to increase awareness about online harassment directed at women, as well as other marginalized groups of individuals. Holding a master's degree in politics and sociology from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. As a child she was captivated by gender issues and feminist thinking. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to create a web series examining gender representation within video games, and was herself at the center of an online harassment campaign. The harassment, however, did not dissuade her. The experience only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. Her work has earned her numerous awards to recognize her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational group that investigates the way women are represented in popular culture narratives.
